Johnston graduated from Midwestern State University in December 2022 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education.

Coach James Johnston has four years of coaching experience across both football and baseball at the high school level. He began his coaching career in Spring 2023 as the Assistant Baseball Coach at Hirschi High School.
During the 2023–2024 school year, Johnston served as the Head Baseball Coach and Assistant Offensive Line Coach at Petrolia High School, where he gained valuable leadership experience managing a full athletic program while contributing to football operations.
In the 2024–2025 school year, Johnston joined the staff at Wichita Falls Legacy High School as the Running Backs Coach and Assistant Baseball Coach, a role he continues to serve in today. He is passionate about athlete development and building strong relationships with student-athletes.

Coach Johnston is getting married to Lexi Jackson, who is also a coach on the Legacy Football Staff, in the Summer of 2026.
